Catcher in the RyeI’ll start my review with a personal life hack: when I see a film rated as average, mixed, or polarizing, it means I absolutely have to watch it. The idea is probably that people struggle to look enthusiastically at something that truly touches them and "scratches" at inner conflicts.

«За пропастью во ржи» (English: Rebel in the Rye) is an American biographical drama directed by Danny Strong, based on Kenneth Slawenski’s novel about the life of Jerome Salinger, the author of The Catcher in the Rye. This film explores the story of a writer who penned the most enigmatically successful book of the 20th century about teenagers—a work that remains relevant today. Here’s why you should watch it:

  1. Kevin Spacey, playing a mentor, offers advice that would be valuable even today if you’re aiming for success: learn to follow your calling, accept rejection, express your thoughts clearly, and understand the needs and interests of others.
  2. If you care about father-son relationships, understanding parental actions, and realizing that a father’s love can take different forms.
  3. To grasp why it’s important for loved ones to provide support and find stability in attachments.
  4. To truly see what a person returning from war feels and, through artistic expression, understand what PTSD is.
  5. How focus, meditation, and a good mentor can improve life and help. I personally loved the guru’s interventions, and as a Gestalt therapist, I was thrilled by his dialogues about fear.
  6. To experience the protagonist’s journey and avoid the profound disillusionment he feels, learning instead to accept people, understand them, and forgive.

I almost forgot to mention the relationships between men and women, the self-sacrifice of the mother figures, and the themes of broken hearts.

Watch and enjoy. And make good use of my life hack!
